Remembering Lloyd “Bob” Cring – A Legacy of Leadership and Craftsmanship

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Lloyd (Bob) Cring, known to many as “Laser Bob.” Bob was more than a colleague, he was a mentor, a friend, and an instrumental part of Alliance Machine and Engraving’s story from the very beginning.

Bob began his career in the engraving industry in Rochester, NY, working alongside Tom Greenberg for many years before relocating to Richmond, VA in 2004. In 2011, when Tom founded Alliance, Bob was one of the very first employees. With over 40 years of experience in machine building, Bob played a pivotal role in launching and growing the business.

As Manager of our Machine Building and Laser Department, Bob brought unmatched expertise, particularly in the implementation of laser engraving technology. He mentored many, most notably Josh Greenberg, ensuring that his knowledge and passion for the craft would live on.

Even in partial retirement, Bob remained close to the work he loved, supporting our team and customers with wisdom, humor, and humility. He was known across the industry and often requested by name for his guidance on embossing and calendering systems. Bob’s dedication and legacy extend far beyond the walls of our facility, reaching six countries and all 48 lower U.S. states through his travels and service.

But perhaps more than anything, Bob will be remembered for his heart. Whether bringing in donuts from his favorite Richmond bakery, smoking brisket for the shop, or checking in on coworkers’ families, Bob was always thinking of others. His kindness was genuine, and his presence left a lasting mark on everyone he met.

As we share memories around the Alliance shop, we all feel the weight of this loss. Yet, through the stories, the laughter, and the quiet moments of reflection, one thing became clear, Bob made us better. Better coworkers, better people, and a better company.

We are grateful for the years we had with him and will carry his spirit forward in the work we do and the lives we lead.

Rest in peace, Bob. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
